On August 26, HTDK was invited to participate in the 2022 Global Medical Device Supply Chain Summit, where the company’s CEO, Teresa Chen, delivered a keynote speech titled “Rooted in China, Looking Globally: Innovating Supply Chain Strategies.” In her address, she shared insights on how multinational medical device companies can overcome challenges and build global supply chain systems, and highlighted HTDK’s exceptional practices in developing an “internal + external” supply chain strategy to capture global market opportunities. Chen joined industry leaders, regulators, scholars, and executives to discuss the future of the medical device supply chain.
As an annual event that explores global trends in the medical device supply chain, the summit has become the most influential gathering in the industry. Held in Guangzhou this year, the event attracted numerous industry leaders, including Alcon, Medtronic, GE, Johnson & Johnson, Siemens, and HTDK. Themed “From Supply Chain to Value Chain,” participants addressed common industry challenges and discussed ways to promote the development of the medical device supply chain.
HTDK, a leader in providing commercialization services for high-value medical devices, has dedicated 26 years to offering comprehensive and advanced supply chain solutions for top multinational clients. With its extensive experience, HTDK has continuously pushed the supply chain forward. As a gold sponsor of the summit, HTDK was honored to collaborate with industry experts to explore key trends and share insights that drive the shift from supply chains to value chains.
During speech, Teresa Chen provided an overview of the medical device market’s development and analyzed the opportunities for multinational companies in China. She emphasized that while China has become the second-largest medical device market globally, there remains significant growth potential in sectors such as orthopedics, ophthalmology, dental, and plastic surgery devices, areas that have higher market shares globally. As the market rapidly evolves, China’s business environment continues to improve, attracting multinational medical device companies to localize their innovation, research, and production efforts. Many have established regional headquarters and distribution centers in China, with Shanghai emerging as the preferred location for its strategic advantages.
Shanghai remains the leading city for medical device imports, accounting for the highest import-export volume in China. In the first half of 2021 alone, the city’s total trade in medical devices reached $16 billion. Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone, one of the country’s most important import hubs, continues to benefit from the headquarters economy effect.
Since establishing its base in the Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone in 1996, HTDK has accumulated extensive experience in both medical device imports and exports. It operates the only cold hazardous material warehouse in the zone, as well as the only platform capable of providing cold hazardous export services. In 2021, HTDK launched its Asia-Pacific medical device distribution center, which includes 6,000 square meters of medical device storage and 1,200 square meters of cold hazardous material storage. The center offers full-chain temperature-controlled solutions for distributing medical devices to 14 countries across the Asia-Pacific via air, sea, and land.
Thanks to its unique cold hazardous export capabilities, HTDK’s customized digital supply chain solutions, and comprehensive emergency management systems, the center has processed over three million export orders, including nearly one million orders for cold hazardous products—representing a year-on-year growth rate of nearly threefold.
Teresa Chen highlighted HTDK’s emergency management practices, sharing a case study from March 2022, when operations continued smoothly in the free trade zone despite the challenges posed by Shanghai’s pandemic control measures.
HTDK remains committed to supporting the value chain at every stage for global high-value medical device brands. With its wide array of innovative, customized value-added services, HTDK provides compliant, reliable, secure, and cost-effective solutions. As a strong “bridge” between the international and domestic markets, HTDK continues to enhance resource allocation, becoming the most trusted partner for multinational medical device companies looking to establish themselves in China while serving the broader Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
